Over the last decade, there has been a steady decline in the number of Americans who identify as religiously affiliated.
Yet, a report from the Pew Research Center finds that over 70% of Americans are “spiritual” in some way. They either think of themselves as spiritual people or say spirituality is essential in their lives.
In an era marked by a global pandemic, loneliness epidemics, and sociopolitical upheaval, a profound spiritual longing has emerged worldwide.
This has led global spiritual innovators to find new ways to adapt and engage in spirituality that stems from diverse beliefs and practices. From redefining rest as resistance to the popularity of “manifestations” and “vision boards” on social media, people worldwide address their emotional, psychological, and social needs by incorporating innovative spiritual practices.
A recent report by Sacred Design Lab highlights spiritual innovators worldwide who are addressing profound spiritual longings in novel ways.
The report found that spiritual well-being is fundamental to sacred flourishing, and promising spiritual innovators have spiritual integrity, project sustainability, and community support. Visionary and devoted innovators from Ireland to Indonesia are addressing spiritual longings with creativity and care. However, the scale of the global need for spiritual well-being dramatically overwhelms the reach of their offerings. Without sustained support, many of their efforts will falter or disappear.
How have your personal experiences shaped your understanding of spirituality, and in what ways do you think innovative practices can enhance that understanding?
