As Carl Sagan said, the notion that science and spirituality are mutually exclusive is a disservice to both. The pair dance in harmony on a soulful quest for meaning.

Scientific inquiry seeks to explain the universe’s workings through observation, experimentation, and evidence. Spirituality addresses the deeper questions of purpose, connection, and the human experience.

Together, they invite us to explore the universe outside and within us as we journey across the landscape of our consciousness and learn about our place within the great tapestry of existence.

Spirituality and science teach us to embrace the empirical truths of the natural world and the intangible mysteries of the soul.

In research published in August 2023 by the Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, a group of scientists addresses an essential but unstudied component of science attitudes: the spirituality of science.

They examined the experience of meaning, connection, and awe derived from scientific ideas, theories, and the scientific process. They defined the spirituality of science as “the deeply positive transcendent experiences that emerge from interactions with science that include feelings of connection, meaning, and awe.”

The study found that though not all people feel spirituality through science, those who do may reap some essential benefits. This includes direct benefits on engagement in science and better science learning and performance.

More broadly, the spirituality of science may provide some critical advantages that parallel those of religious spirituality. This includes benefits for general well-being and overall feelings of meaning in life.

How do your personal experiences with science and spirituality shape your understanding of your place in the universe?
