Interfaith empathy and shared humanity exploration
Time: 30 min – multiple days
Things you will need: A phone or computer, a friend
Start by selecting a tradition to explore. Choose a faith tradition other than your own (or if you have no particular religion, pick any tradition you’re curious about). Spend a little time learning about one of its core teachings on a universal value such as compassion, hospitality, forgiveness, or service.
After reading or listening, take a few quiet minutes to reflect. How does this teaching resonate with your own values and experiences? Consider practicing “Sacred Listening” with someone. Reach out to a friend, colleague, or neighbor and invite them to share something about their spiritual practice or values. Approach this conversation with deep listening and make sure to listen with empathy.
Conclude your exercise by integrating what you’ve learned. In the coming week, try to put into practice the value you explored, inspired by both your tradition and the one you learned about. Notice how these practices affect your perspective. Many people find that engaging with another tradition’s wisdom actually enriches their own faith or philosophy, deepening their commitment to universal virtues. Consider reflecting in your journal or in prayer and meditation on how this experience has broadened your understanding.
