A Sacred Approach to the Common Good
Across the world, the field of politics often feels anything but sacred. In country after country, power struggles feed off division, injustice, and a hunger for control. Yet, as bleak as this landscape appears, a more profound truth calls to us: politics can be an expression of our highest spiritual values. It can be a space where love, justice, and our shared humanity are on full display.
We live during a time of global fracture. In places as varied as Brazil, India, Poland, and the United States, social divides have widened into chasms, aggravated by leaders who stoke fear and demonize opponents. This pervasive “us versus them” mentality breeds mistrust and isolation. It also undermines the fundamental spiritual truth of our interconnectedness.
Amid these divisions, the cry for justice echoes loudly. Spiritual traditions worldwide teach that a society is measured by how it treats its most vulnerable members. Many communities suffer under the weight of corruption or violence as political life strays from its moral principles.
When politics loses its moral compass, inequality and suffering deepen, violating the sacred mandate to care for each other. As Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel observed, the wisdom of faith reminds us that “in a free society, some are guilty, but all are responsible,” insisting that we cannot disregard our neighbor’s pain.
How can embodying your core spiritual values influence the way you engage with political issues in your community, and what actions can you take to align your response more closely with those values?
