A Sacred Shift for the Earth

Reimagining Environmental Transformation Through Spiritual and Indigenous Worldviews

While science and policy remain vital tools in addressing the environmental crisis, they alone cannot shift the trajectory of our planet. At the Fetzer Institute, we believe lasting ecological healing requires a transformation at the level of a sacred worldview — a reawakening to the sacred nature of all life.

The Environment Coalition is a growing network of leaders and organizations who understand that our environmental challenges are deeply spiritual in nature. These changemakers bring together diverse faith traditions, Indigenous wisdom, contemplative practices, ecological science, and systems thinking. What unites them is a commitment to re-centering our relationship with Earth — not as a commodity to be managed, but as a sacred connection to be honored.

This coalition is not focused solely on policy reform or technological solutions — though those have their place. Instead, it asks:

What does it mean to live in reverence?
What becomes possible when we see the Earth not as “other,” but as kin?
Through convenings, storytelling, collaboration, and shared practices, the coalition fosters a deeper spiritual ecology — one that invites both inner and societal transformation.

We believe that by supporting those who are helping communities rediscover this sacred connection, we can catalyze a cultural shift powerful enough to meet the urgency of our time. This is not just a movement to slow ecological collapse; it is a movement to awaken love, reciprocity, and justice as guiding forces for how we live on this planet together.
