"Shared Sacred Story" Podcast, Episode 2: The Power of Mu with Ruben Habito

In the second episode of the Fetzer Institute’s new podcast project, we talked with Ruben Habito about the “why of things.”

Having spent the past two decades studying and practicing Zen Buddhism, Ruben brings a deeply informed and thoughtful perspective to the pursuit of the Sacred. In the past, Ruben spent many years studying Buddhism and teaching Sacred Theology at Sophia University in Tokyo.

Currently, he teaches at Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University. In that capacity, he holds the position of Professor of World Religions and Spirituality and directs the school’s Spiritual Formation and Spiritual Direction Certificate programs. He is also the guiding teacher of the Maria Kannon Zen Center in Dallas.

Ruben started his faith journey as a Jesuit. After his first serious encounter with Buddhism, he came under the guidance of the internationally renowned Japanese Zen master Yamada Koun Roshi. Throughout the episode, Ruben explores the two Spiritual paths that have so intimately shaped his life. He examines the complexities of Buddhism and Zen, delineates between loneliness and solitude, and shares encouragement, experiences, and thoughtful takeaways for those looking for fulfillment and purpose as they navigate a multi-religious experience. Ruben Habito is a member of our Scholar-Practitioners Buddhist Team.
